Olympian Andy Hrovat, World Medalists Don Pritzlaff and Jake Herbert, and large numbers of NCAA National Champions, NCAA All-Americans, USA Wrestling National Champions, and Illinois High School State Champions have come through the Overtime School of Wrestling. The techniques taught at Overtime MMA are shown by this world class wrestling staff, which is widely regarded as the best wrestling staff of any gym in the United States. Led by multiple-time USA Wrestling Coach of the Year Sean Bormet, the Overtime School of Wrestling staff and wrestlers who trained under their tutelage join other current MMA fighters with wrestling backgrounds to teach the highest-level techniques available anywhere in this core discipline.
Amateur wrestling has provided a strong base for many of the top MMA fighters in the world, and the number of wrestlers successfully competing in MMA fighting continues to grow. Our wrestling classes teach takedowns, sprawls, and situational drills that have been proven to be effective in MMA.
Grappling is most familiar to fans of mixed martial arts as the predominant discipline that fighters use when a fight goes to the ground. It is a merger of takedown techniques and submissions from wrestling, Judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Grappling concentrates on dominating by using angles, leverage, and superior body positioning to apply a choke, arm lock, and/or leg lock to a participant’s opponent. Whether your goals are weight loss, casual training, or serious MMA fighting, grappling gives you one of the most practical and effective full-body workouts available.
Commonly referred to as BJJ, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is similar to grappling, only participants wear a traditional gi while doing it.
The Overtime MMA jiu-jitsu program is the ideal place for a fighter looking to enhance his submission game, or for the individual looking to improve his or her physical fitness and self defense skills. Our Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructors learned directly from Demian Maia, who is currently a top UFC Middleweight. Demian Maia, an Abu Dhabi Champion and five-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu World Champion, is widely regarded as one of the premier submission experts in the world today.
Boxing is a great workout to build cardiovascular fitness, physical stamina, and strength. Students will learn various boxing techniques and skills that can be used by anyone with a goal of competing, as well as by those who just desire a great conditioning workout. Boxing workouts include pad and bag work, footwork, as well as conditioning exercises like jumping rope.
Sparring is optional in all boxing classes. That is, you will never have to spar if you do not feel comfortable doing so.
We have an Advanced Boxing class for individuals who are training seriously to compete in boxing. This class is only open to members who are approved by the Overtime MMA staff. We will line up bouts for individuals who our staff feels are ready to compete.
Muay Thai directly translates "Thai Boxing," and it is the national sport of Thailand. It is a style of kickboxing where participants fight using feet, hands, knees, and elbows. The sport has become world renowned for its simplicity, effectiveness, and outstanding cardio benefits.
Like all of our programs, the Muay Thai kickboxing training program at Overtime MMA is open to individuals at all skills levels, and you will never have to spar if you do not want to. Our Muay Thai workouts are an excellent way for men and women of all ages to get in shape, lose weight, and learn realistic self defense methods.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fighting style seen in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), Strikeforce, and many other organizations. It is not a separate style of fighting; rather, it is the combination of the techniques from all of the disciplines listed above, including strikes, kicks, submissions, and takedowns.
MMA Class
We are offering a series of MMA classes intended for athletes who are new to training in mixed martial arts, or who are new to certain portions of mixed martial arts. The purpose of these classes will be for MMA enthusiasts and aspiring competitors alike to grasp the fundamentals of all of the primary disciplines, positions, and training habits involved in the broad array of skills that are encompassed by mixed martial arts.
These MMA classes will be open to all members, and they will be run in a six-week series. New members are welcome to jump into the series at any time. Before being approved for MMA Fighter Training (see above), members will very likely be asked to train for at least 6-12 weeks in MMA classes. Even though many people have a background in one of the disciplines that make up mixed martial arts (boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, grappling, etc), it is necessary to get a background in ALL of the disciplines needed in order to be successful in mixed martial arts competitions. It is also useful for an athlete with a background in one discipline to have a broad understanding of how the specific discipline that he or she knows well ties into the overall picture of mixed martial arts.
For members who are interested in combat sports but are not sure that they want to go into all-out MMA training, this series of classes will also serve to let members feel out what discipline or instructor they are most comfortable working with. With exposure to all different types of martial arts, members can effectively make an informed decision about choosing what training regimen or competition team will work best for them.
Advanced MMA Fighter Training
We also have an Advanced MMA Fighter Training class that is open only to individuals who are training seriously to compete in mixed martial arts. This class is only open to members who are approved by the Overtime MMA staff. These classes are intended for individuals who know how to spar safely, are familiar with a wide array of MMA positions, are in good enough shape to push through an intense 1 hour 45 minute MMA practice, and can learn at a fast pace. Most new members will be required to go to regular MMA classes for at least 6-12 weeks to start out with until they have a basic understanding of all of the skills involved in mixed martial arts training. Please contact our staff if you would like to participate in Fighter Training classes. We will line up bouts for individuals who our staff feels are ready to compete.
Individuals wishing to compete in live mixed martial arts bouts will have to meet very high standards of training in order for us to support their competitive goals. We will require an individual to state their goals, train hard, and have their skills evaluated by our staff for a period of time, and then we will work together with them to set up a specific, structured career path.
Mike Corey will be showing members how to push themselves to their limits when training in mixed martial arts. A former Marine Corps martial arts instructor, IFL veteran, and elite MMA fighter who has fought in high-level promotions from Chicago to Bahrain, Corey is as well known for his well-rounded MMA game as he is for ultra-intense training habits. If you're up for the ultimate physical challenge, want to go through a hard workout before you kick off your weekend, or want to take your conditioning to the next level, this class is for you.
Improve your total endurance, enhance athletic performance, and reduce injuries. The Overtime MMA functional training classes utilize a continuous progression of exercise patterns combining several muscle groups and joints, while also burning calories more efficiently. Exercises include agilities, plyometrics, tire flips, medicine ball exercises, kettle bells, tire jumps, body weight exercises, sledge hammers, and sprint work. Functional training classes are ideal for the individual seeking something other than basic weight lifting or cardio workouts – functional training workouts are always challenging and never dull!
In the Kids' class (ages 9-12), children will learn various fundamental positions and techniques of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and boxing. It is mandatory that kids own a gi in order to be in Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes. In boxing classes, kids will learn how to box, but will not be sparring. Children will also participate in activities and games to keep the environment both fun and challenging.
