Bruce Guevara Wins IBJJF Houston International Open, Goes 4-0 With Four Submissions

Bruce Guevara went 4-0 with four wins by submission en route to winning the championship at the IBJJF Houston International Open on Saturday, March 6th. Guevara competed in the Adult Blue Belt Gi Division in the 154-pound weight class.

Guevara, who won a Silver Medal earlier this year in the 60kg Division at the 2009 FILA World Championships, said it was a different style of competition in Houston than he was used to.

"Competitors came from all over the United States," explained Guevara.  "There were a lot of competitors there from Texas, a lot of people from the southern United States.  I felt like they fight a little bit differently.  They're not as wrestler-like; they're more laid back, more jiu-jitsu based."

He also talked about the competition level at the tournament.

"I'm glad I went," said Bruce.  "It was a good experience.  For my jiu-jitsu career, I have to compete at these types of tournaments, where it's the best guys that show up.  Being a [IBJJF] federation tournament, they know if they're not ready, they don't want to show up.  They don't want to travel halfway across the country and go 0-1.  You've got to go in there knowing that your skill level is high enough that you can compete with the rest of the competitors."

Bruce is just getting his competitive schedule ramped up.  He talked about his future plans.

"I'm looking forward to competing in the next couple of months," he said.  "I've got Pan Ams, NAGA, and then the Worlds in the summer."

"Thanks to Mark Turner, my other coaches, and training partners," added Guevara.

Overtime MMA's grappling and jiu-jitsu teams will next compete at the Pan American Games on April 8-12 in California and at the NAGA tournament in Chicago on April 24.
