Sam Ferguson Wins Amateur Boxing Debut, Overtime Boxing Goes 1-1

Sam Ferguson (1-0) defeated Jake Michaliska of Lomeli Boxing by a 2-1 margin in a spirited fight that had the crowd on its feet for much of the third period.  The hard-fought win gave Ferguson a victory in his first amateur boxing event.  The two boxed as heavyweights (over 200 pounds).

"He did what he was supposed to do," said Overtime Boxing Head Coach Gustavo Pique.  "He won, he learned, he did good."

Also fighting was Sid Medrano (1-3) in the light heavyweight division (175 pounds).  Sal DeLaurentis, also of Lomeli Boxing, won the fight by TKO in the first round.

The event took place at Joe's Bar on Weed St. in Chicago.  Overtime Manager Koy Kosek and Gustavo Pique had high praise for the event.

"It was one of the best amateur shows I've ever been to in the city," said Pique, referring to the quality of the competition.  "They do a really good job of putting on shows."

"I've been to the last three shows that Standing 8-Count Productions has put on at this venue, and the quality of the boxing here has definitely improved noticeably during that time," said Kosek.  "The majority of the fights tonight looked more like a serious amateur tournament than like a typical amateur show in a bar.  You can tell that it's now the more serious boxing gyms in Chicago who are sending their fighters there."

Chad Piano (0-0) withdrew from the event due to injury.  The matchmaker was unable to find a suitable opponent for 125-pound Jon Yu (0-0).  "They've been training hard and they'll be ready for the next opportunity," said Koy Kosek.

Overtime Boxing will next compete at the Chicago Golden Gloves.  The prestigious tournament runs from March 11-April 10.
